Conshohocken Elementary welcomed librarian from Conshohocken Free Library
Kate Scannell-Daniel, known as “Miss Kate” by patrons of the Conshohocken Free Library, recently stopped by Conshohocken Elementary School to share a book and lesson with the students.
The group read the book, The Song in the City, written by Daniel Bernstrom and illustrated by Jenin Mohammed. In the story, the main character was blind, but she could hear really well. Her favorite “song” was the sounds she heard around town.
“I really liked the book,” said first grader Adam Shaffer.
The story led to a discussion about looking at things from a different perspective. “We talked about how some people navigate the world a little bit differently, but we can put ourselves in their shoes and really learn a lot,” said Miss Kate.
In the second part of the lesson, the class used rhythm sticks to find the beat in music and tap out different patterns. This part of the lesson was first grader Maggie Goglia’s favorite. “I liked the music, because I liked the rhythm that it had in it,” she said.
The visit was tied to Read Across America week, where the theme was “Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers with Story, Sound, and Song.” Earlier in the week, teachers from Conshohocken Elementary school took turns reading at the Conshohocken Free Library.
